Blood Cancer Treatment in India:

Blood cancer which is also known as leukemia affects the production and function of your blood cells. This type of cancer starts in the bone marrow.

Today, there is a hope of a cure through a bone marrow transplant or peripheral blood stem cell transplant. Today, transplantation of healthy stem cells donated by related and unrelated volunteers offers hope to many patients suffering from these deadly diseases.

What are the types of blood cancer?

Blood cancer affects the blood cells and bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue inside your bones where blood cells are made.

There are three major types of blood cancer:

  1. Leukemia – cancer that is found in your blood and bone marrow.
  2. Lymphoma – a blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
  3. Myeloma – a blood cancer that specifically targets your plasma cells.

Our program provides advanced care for blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

What are the types of Leukemia and how is it treated?

People who have leukemia make a lot of white blood cells that can’t fight infections. Leukemia is divided into four types based on the kind of white blood cell it affects and whether it grows quickly (acute) or slowly (chronic).

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) – This starts with white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell found in the blood and made by the bone marrow. People with ALL make too many lymphocytes that crowd the healthy white blood cells. ALL can advance quickly if it’s not treated.

Usually, children who are 3 to 5 years are affected by ALL, but adults over 75 years can get it too. The main causes of Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) are given below:

  • Genetic disorder – if you have a brother or sister with ALL or Down syndrome.
  • Side effects of past treatment – Were treated with chemotherapy or radiation for another type of cancer in the past

The treatment for this type of Leukemia involves three main steps –Induction, Consolidation and Maintenance.

  1. Induction: Induction therapy focuses on killing the leukemia cells in the bone marrow as well as in blood. The treatment lasts for four weeks and involves chemotherapy as well as corticosteroids.
  2. Consolidation: Consolidation is a therapy that kills even those leukemia cells that don’t show up in tests. It can go on for months, but it doesn’t necessitate overnight stays at the hospital. It includes chemotherapy and maybe even stem cell transplant.
  3. Maintenance: Maintenance therapy concentrates on preventing the leukemia cells from growing and multiplying. It involves low doses of chemotherapy and may go on for about three years. However, patients can go back to living their normal lifestyles during this phase of treatment.

The patient would be considered cured if he does not come across any of the leukemia symptoms for five years. However, if it does return within the initial few years, the patient will have to undergo chemotherapy or a stem cell transplant. He/she may even have to join a clinical trial for newer treatments.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML):

This starts in myeloid cells, which normally grow into white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. AML lowers the number of healthy blood cells in all three types. This form of leukemia grows quickly.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) mainly affects people over age 65. It is more common in men than in women.

The main causes of Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are given below:

  • Side effects of past treatment – Have been treated with chemotherapy or radiation for cancer.
  • Blood disorder – A blood disorder like myelodysplasia or polycythemia vera, or a genetic disorder like Down syndrome.
  • Effects of Environment – Exposes to toxic chemicals like benzene, Smoke.

The treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia includes two steps:

  1. Induction of Remission: As in ALL treatment, induction of remission in AML involves the destruction of leukemia cells in the blood as well as in the bone marrow. It is done through chemotherapy for about a week or so. After this, you will need to be in the hospital for three more weeks for bone marrow recovery.
  2. Post Remission Therapy: This phase of treatment involves more chemotherapy and a Stem Cell Transplant to make sure all the leukemia cells are eliminated from the body, even if they fail to show up in the tests. This may go on for about three to four months.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL):

Like Acute lymphocytic leukemia, it starts from lymphocytes in bone marrow, but it grows more slowly. Many people with Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) don’t show any symptoms until years after cancer starts.

This is the most common type of leukemia in adults. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia mainly affects people in their 70s or older.

The main causes of Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are given below:

  • Genetic History – A family history of blood cancer is one of the cause.
  • Effects of Environment – Exposes to chemicals like weed killers or insecticides.

The treatment plan for this type of leukemia would include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. While radiation therapy would treat the lymph nodes that get swollen due to too many abnormal lymphocytes, chemotherapy works on destroying the leukemia cells through a combination of medications.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML):

This blood cancer starts in myeloid cells, like Acute Myeloid Leukemia. But the abnormal cells grow slowly.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is slightly more common in men than in women. It usually affects adults, but kids can sometimes get it, too.

The main causes of Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are if you have been around high amounts of radiation.

The treatment for this type of leukemia includes:

  • Targeted Therapy: This treatment works very well for patients who are in the early stages of CML. This involves the use of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, which can go on for years. They may not even need a stem cell transplant if there is no relapse.
  • Bone Marrow Transplant: Before this, the bone marrow activity will have to be destroyed through chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This will ensure a more successful transplant.

This is a cancer of the lymph system which includes your lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus gland. The lymph system store and carry white blood cells to help your body fight infections. Lymphomas starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes. There are two main types of lymphoma:

  • Hodgkin's lymphoma starts in immune cells called B lymphocytes, or B cells. These cells make proteins called antibodies that fight off germs. People with Hodgkin's lymphoma have large lymphocytes called Reed-Sternberg cells in their lymph nodes.
  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma may occur in a single lymph node, a group of lymph nodes, or an organ and can spread to almost any part of the body. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is more common than Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Lymphoma is most often diagnosed in people ages 15 to 35 and over age 50.

The main causes of Lymphoma are given below:

  • Weak immune systems.
  • Exposes to Infection - Epstein-Barr virus, HIV, or Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria raises your chances.

Myeloma develops when the body overproduces plasma cells. Normally, certain white blood cells leave the bone marrow and mature in other parts of the body. Some of these develop into plasma cells that produce proteins called antibodies that move through the bloodstream to help the body get rid of harmful substances. When cancer involves plasma cells, the body keeps producing more and more of these cells. The unneeded plasma cells which are abnormal are called myeloma cells. They can collect in the bones and form tumors or cause other problems.

Myeloma cells spread through the bone marrow, and they damage your bones and crowd out the healthy blood cells. This cancer is often called multiple myeloma because it's found in many parts of your bone marrow.

Men over age 50 are most likely to get it, and African-Americans have higher odds of it than other people.

The main causes of Myeloma are given below:

  • Genetic History - A family history of myeloma is one of the cause.
  • Exposed to radiation

Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) refers to a group of disorders in which the bone marrow produces too few mature and/or functioning red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. It begins with a change to a normal stem cell in the bone marrow.

What are the different types of treatment available for blood cancer?

Treatment for blood cancer depends on the type of cancer, your age, how fast the cancer is progressing, where cancer has spread and other factors. Some common blood cancer treatments include:

Bone Marrow Transplant: A stem cell transplant infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into the body. Stem cells may be collected from the bone marrow, circulating blood and umbilical cord blood.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs to interfere with and stop the growth of cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy for blood cancer sometimes involves giving several drugs together in a set regimen. This treatment may also be given before a stem cell transplant.

Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy may be used to destroy cancer cells or to relieve pain or discomfort. It may also be given before a stem cell transplant.

What can you expect after blood (leukemia) cancer treatment?

In cases of early diagnosis, the chances are higher of the leukemia cancer getting treated completely. In other cases, however, the treatment will only be focused on controlling the growth of cancer cells.

Regular treatment is necessary for blood cancer. You need to attend follow-up sessions that may involve certain blood tests and a physical examination to monitor the growth of cancer and minimize the side effects.

What is the success rate of blood cancer treatment?

With the advancements in technology, the overall mortality rate due to blood cancer (leukemia) has been descending by 1% every year. There has been a 60% survival rate in case of leukemia patients.
